Convert between photography measurements including f-stops, ISO values, shutter speeds, and exposure values. Essential for photographers to understand exposure relationships.
F-stop (f-number) measures the size of the lens aperture opening. Each full f-stop represents a doubling or halving of light reaching the sensor. Common f-stops include f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22.
Example: f/2.8 lets in twice as much light as f/4
ISO measures the camera sensor's sensitivity to light. Standard ISO values follow a pattern: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, etc. Each doubling of ISO value doubles the sensor sensitivity.
Important: Higher ISO values can introduce digital noise
Shutter speed controls how long the camera sensor is exposed to light. Common shutter speeds: 1/1000s, 1/500s, 1/250s, 1/125s, 1/60s, 1/30s, 1/15s, 1/8s, 1/4s, 1/2s, 1s.
Rule of thumb: Use 1/focal length as minimum shutter speed for hand-held shots
Exposure Value represents the brightness of a scene. EV helps photographers understand the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
EV Relationship: Each EV change represents a doubling of light
